Why Northern NSW Slabs Need a Different Approach

Two things shape floors in this region. Salt, because the strip from Tweed to Lennox Head sits right on the water and a coating that fails in that air is an expensive lesson. And water, because the Richmond and Wilsons rivers have put a lot of slabs under, and the rebuild changed what people want underfoot.

Mechanically polished concrete answers both. It is the slab itself, not a film on top, so there is nothing to lift, chalk or write off. We cover Tweed Heads through Byron and Ballina down to Lismore and Casino, and inland to Bangalow and Mullumbimby.

Honed Concrete

Matte, low-sheen honed concrete for driveways, patios and pool surrounds. The default outdoor choice from Kingscliff to Lennox Head, because it grips underfoot when wet and holds up in salt air.

Epoxy Flooring

Clear, solid colour and flake epoxy for garages, sheds and rural workshops. Hoses out, shrugs off oil and fertiliser, and takes the traffic a working shed near Casino or Alstonville puts through it.

A Real Crew, Not a Subcontractor

Plenty of Northern Rivers jobs get quoted by someone who then hires a local. We bring our own crew and machines down from Eagle Farm.

Free guide: 5 mistakes people make when choosing a concrete finish.

Tweed City Shopping Centre, Tweed Heads

We honed the concrete right through the external areas at Tweed City and inside the walkway to the Hoyts cinemas. A full stone exposure honed finish, ground back and sealed, over a centre that stays open seven days.

Retail centres are a hard test for a floor. It has to grip when wet, take trolleys and thousands of feet a day, and be worked on in stages so shops keep trading. Honed concrete handles all three, and because the finish is ground into the slab rather than coated on top, there is nothing to peel or re-apply.

Polished concrete Byron Bay: polished concrete reception floor at the YHA youth hostel

YHA Youth Hostel, Byron Bay

Backpacker traffic is about as hard as a floor gets. Wheeled luggage, wet feet off the beach, sand through the door all day and a reception that never really closes. We polished the ground floor through reception and the common areas.

Polished concrete suited it because there is nothing to lift or replace. Sand gets swept, water gets mopped, and the floor keeps the light moving through a tall, glassy space instead of soaking it up.

Concrete Flooring Across the Northern Rivers

We cover Northern NSW from Tweed Heads down through Byron Bay, Ballina and Lennox Head to Lismore, Casino and Grafton, and inland to Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Alstonville. Homeowners, builders and businesses, with every floor backed by our QBCC licence and 15+ years on the tools.

Polished Concrete in Northern NSW

Mechanically polished concrete is the slab you already own, ground and refined through progressively finer diamonds until it reaches the sheen you choose. Nothing is applied on top, so there is no film to lift or yellow. You pick how much stone shows, from a smooth cream finish through to full aggregate, and the gloss level from matte to high. For a faster, lower-cost result we also offer grind and seal, which is a coating over a ground slab and a good fit for lower-traffic spaces.

Rebuilding After Flood

A lot of Lismore, Coraki and Woodburn homes came out of the 2022 floods with the slab intact and everything on top of it ruined. Once a slab is dry and moisture tested, grinding takes off the silt line and staining that soaked into the surface, and what is underneath is usually sound. The appeal is what happens next time: there is no carpet, underlay or floating floor to write off, and a polished slab hoses out and dries.

Salt Air and Coastal Sites

From Kingscliff to Lennox Head the salt gets into everything, and coatings that were specified inland do not always last. Honed concrete is the outdoor standard here because it is ground, not coated, and it grips when wet. Indoors, mechanically polished concrete has no film to chalk or peel. Where a coating is genuinely the right answer, on a shed floor or a garage, we specify UV stable systems rather than a general purpose epoxy. Our commercial epoxy flooring is built for forklifts, racking and steady foot traffic, finished with line marking, bunding and slip resistance to match the use. Showrooms and hospitality often go polished or grind and seal instead. We programme the work around your hours so trade keeps moving.

Concrete Grinding and Floor Preparation

Most jobs start here. Our concrete grinding service levels slabs and strips tiles, glue, paint and old coatings, whether that is prep for a new floor, a lease-end make-good on a Ballina industrial unit, or the first stage of a flood rebuild. Where a slab needs building back up, a feather finish smooths it before coating.

Honed Concrete Outdoors

Sun, sand and a serious wet season are hard on outdoor surfaces. Honed concrete is ground back and sealed for grip and UV resistance, which is why it is our default for driveways, patios, paths and pool surrounds along the coast. A high gloss finish outdoors looks good in a photo and is a hazard in the rain.

Sealing and Resealing

Bare concrete here cops salt air, pool splash and a heavy wet season. Sealing it, with either a penetrating sealer or a grind and seal finish, stops driveways, garage slabs and polished floors staining and dusting. On the coast treat it as maintenance rather than a one-off: a reseal every few years is what keeps a slab looking new.

Mechanically Polished Concrete: Harder, and Built to Last

Mechanically polished concrete (MPC) is more than a finish. Grinding and densifying the slab through progressively finer diamonds hardens the surface so it ends up around ten times harder than untreated concrete, which is why it wears so well in busy Northern Rivers homes, cafes and shopfronts. You choose the look, from a smooth cream finish through to full stone exposure, and matte through to high gloss, and where slip is a concern we work a non-slip grit into the sealer. Once a commercial and industrial staple, polished concrete is now a first choice in homes here, chosen over tile and timber for kitchens, bathrooms and entries.

What Does It Cost in Northern NSW?

What you pay turns on three things: how big the floor is, what state the slab is in, and the finish you choose. Clear or solid colour epoxy and grind and seal are the value end, while decorative flake and a full mechanically polished floor sit at the premium end. Northern NSW Concrete Flooring FAQs

Do you actually cross the border into Northern NSW?

Yes. Tweed Heads is under an hour from our Eagle Farm base and we run crews down through Ballina, Byron Bay and Lismore regularly. It is a scheduled run rather than a favour, so you get the same machines and the same crew that work our Brisbane jobs, not a local subcontractor.

Can a flood damaged slab be polished?

Often yes, and it is the question we get most from Lismore and the Richmond Valley. Once a slab has dried and been moisture tested, grinding removes the silt line and staining that soaked into the surface, and what is underneath is usually sound. The real appeal is next time: there is no carpet, underlay or floating floor to write off, and a polished slab hoses out and dries.

Does salt air affect an epoxy or polished floor?

Salt is hard on coatings, so for exposed sites at Byron, Lennox Head and Kingscliff we favour honed concrete outdoors and UV stable systems where a coating is genuinely needed. Mechanically polished concrete is not a coating at all, so there is no film to lift or chalk in coastal air.

What is the minimum job size for Northern NSW?

There is no hard minimum, but a single small room is not economical on its own because the machinery has to be floated down regardless. Most Northern Rivers work is a whole house, a shed, a cafe fitout or a commercial slab. If your job is small, ask when we are next in your area and we may fit it around a nearby job.
