A Thin Micro Cement Concrete Overlay

A polished concrete overlay (also called a micro cement floor or micro topping) is a thin cement based layer we hand trowel straight onto your existing slab. It builds a smooth, seamless concrete look without grinding back into the slab, so you get the floor you wanted even when the original concrete is too damaged, patched or uneven to polish.

Most systems are only a few millimetres thick, so height changes at doorways and transitions are almost non existent. We build the overlay on a white base and tint it with oxide, so it comes in white, grey, charcoal or a custom colour to suit the space. It works equally well in homes and commercial fit outs, and we install polished concrete overlay floors across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Microcement for Floors & Walls

OzGrind installs microcement right across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, on floors and walls, indoors and out. Because it is only a few millimetres thick and bonds to almost any sound surface, micro cement can go straight over the top of existing tiles, render, plasterboard, splashbacks, benchtops and stairs, with no demolition and almost no height change.

It gives you the seamless, hand trowelled concrete look in bathrooms and showers (fully waterproofed), kitchens, feature walls, living areas and alfresco, in any colour from soft white through to deep charcoal.

When to Use an Overlay

Most of our overlays go down for one reason: the existing slab cannot be polished. Old coatings, glue, heavy stains, cracks and uneven surfaces all stop it polishing up cleanly. Rather than rip it out and re-pour, we trowel a thin overlay over the top for the same seamless concrete look. We also turn to an overlay when a tile ghosting sample for polished concrete comes back positive, or when a slab poured for a nil exposure finish has not turned out the way it was specified.

Almost No Height Change

Most systems are only a few millimetres thick, so it sits over the existing floor without major changes at doorways, skirtings or transitions.

How It Compares on Cost

Feather finish, micro cement and polished concrete overlays are three different floor systems, but they are all thin, hand trowelled cement toppings we lay straight over your existing slab when polishing is off the table. Feather finish is the lighter, more rustic and economical option; micro cement is the premium, harder wearing and more refined finish.

Polished concrete overlay and micro cement floor prices in Brisbane are quoted per square metre, and come down to the area, the condition of your existing slab and the finish you choose. Larger open areas work out more cost effective than small or broken up rooms, and a sound slab keeps surface preparation and concrete resurfacing costs down. Because every coat is hand trowelled rather than poured or rolled on, these floors sit at the premium end, with no two ever quite the same.

Epoxy Coating
$ · LOWEST COST

A cheap, hard wearing coating that suits garages, sheds and industrial floors. It seals the surface against oil, water and chemicals, but it can peel, chip or yellow over time, which is why we do not recommend it for internal living areas in homes.

Polished Concrete
$$ · BEST VALUE

Grinding and polishing your existing slab to a smooth, sealed finish. The most cost effective concrete floor when the slab underneath is sound enough to polish, and the most durable and scratch resistant of every option here, because you are walking on the hardened slab itself rather than a coating or topping over it.

Overlay, Micro Cement & Feather Finish
$$$ · PREMIUM

Hand trowelled toppings laid over your slab, for when polishing is off the table. Feather finish is the lighter, more rustic and economical option; micro cement is the premium, harder wearing and more refined system.

Low Build Profile

At just 2 to 5mm thick, an overlay goes straight over your existing slab with almost no height change at doorways or transitions.

Any Colour You Like

Built on a white base and tinted with oxide, the overlay comes in white, grey, charcoal or a custom colour to suit your space.

Smooth, Seamless Look

Hand trowelled by our team, an overlay creates a continuous concrete surface with a smooth, monolithic look from wall to wall.

Goes Over Existing Slabs

An ideal way to refresh a tired floor, covering stains, patches and imperfections that would otherwise show through a polish.

When You Cannot Polish

If a slab is too damaged, uneven or stained to polish, an overlay delivers the concrete look you wanted without a full replacement.

Commercial and Residential

Used in shops, offices, cafes, restaurants and homes across Brisbane, it suits both busy fit outs and relaxed living spaces.

A Concrete Overlay Over Existing Concrete

One of the most common questions we get is whether a concrete overlay can go straight over an existing concrete floor. In most cases, yes. We prepare and profile the slab, fill any damage and trowel a micro cement overlay over the top, so you get a seamless concrete floor without the cost, dust and disruption of ripping the old slab out and re-pouring.

From White & Soft Grey to Deep Charcoal

A concrete overlay is built on a white base and tinted with oxides, so we can match almost any tone, from bright whites and soft natural greys through to deep charcoal. Because it is hand trowelled, the finish has a subtle, cloudy movement rather than a flat, uniform colour, and we seal it matte or with a low sheen to suit the space.

Soft & Natural

A flat, low glare finish that hides marks and footprints. The most forgiving option and the finish we recommend for most homes, from living areas to bedrooms.

Gloss
Polished & Reflective

A brighter, reflective surface that lifts the light in a space. A striking option, best suited to showrooms, retail and feature areas.

Thickness, Indoor & Outdoor Options

A concrete overlay is not a single product. We choose the system, thickness and sealer to suit the floor, from a fine decorative topping to a heavier trafficable overlay, indoors or out. Most finishes are only a few millimetres thick.

Fine Micro Cement
Around 2mm

A smooth decorative topping for walls, splashbacks and low traffic interior floors where the slimmest profile matters most.

Standard Floor Overlay
Around 3 to 4mm

Our most popular system for living areas, kitchens, retail and offices, balancing a slim profile with everyday durability.

Heavy Duty Overlay
Built up in layers

A thicker, trowelled overlay for busy commercial floors and lobbies that take constant foot traffic.

Indoor & Outdoor
Sealed & UV stable

Systems made for alfresco areas, patios, pool surrounds and entries, as well as wet areas like bathrooms and laundries.

Not sure which system suits your slab? We will assess the floor and recommend the right thickness, finish and sealer for where it is going, indoors or outdoors.

"OzGrind did the concrete flooring inside my home, as well as the concrete areas outside my home. It was a big job. But what an amazing job they did. They put in a lot of work and effort, and the result is a whole new lease of life. There were many issues with the old concrete areas outside, it was uneven and patchy from the old stencilling. And the inside flooring and skirting was rotted in many areas from moisture damage. Those problems are now gone. The team have an excellent work ethic and go above and beyond your expectations. I can't highly recommend them enough."

"OzGrind did an awesome job on the old concrete floor under our house. They turned it from a dusty cracked uneven set of slabs to a beautiful and fully functional space we are happy to spend time in. They were very professional throughout the process and went above and beyond to give us the best outcome and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend them."

Feather Finish Floors

If you have been quoted for a feather finish floor, a feather finish concrete floor or a feathered concrete overlay, you are on the right page. A feather finish is part of the same family of hand trowelled overlays as micro cement, but it is a distinct, lighter and more economical finish, feathered out in thin coats over your existing slab. It is the more rustic, hand made look, where micro cement is the refined, harder wearing premium system.

What is a feather finish floor?

A feather finish floor is a thin, hand trowelled cement based topping applied over an existing concrete slab. It is built up in successive thin coats and feathered out by hand so the surface sits flush with almost no height change at doorways and transitions. The same floor is sold under several names, feather finish, feathered concrete, micro cement, micro topping, microcement render and concrete overlay, but the result is the same seamless, hand finished concrete look.

Is a feather finish the same as a concrete overlay or micro cement?

Not quite. A feather finish, a micro cement floor and a polished concrete overlay all belong to the same family of thin, hand trowelled cement toppings, but they are not identical. A feather finish is the lighter, more rustic and more economical finish, while micro cement is a more refined, harder wearing and premium system, and pricing reflects that. Naming also varies between installers, suppliers and product brands. At OzGrind we group them under concrete overlay and micro cement because that is what most Brisbane and Gold Coast clients search for, and we will recommend the right finish for your slab and budget.

Why we use the term concrete overlay

We lead with polished concrete overlay and micro cement because those are the terms most homeowners, builders and designers use when they are comparing flooring options. Feather finish is more common as a trade term for the lighter, hand feathered finish, so we have kept it here to make sure clients who know the floor by that name can still find us and see how it sits alongside micro cement.

Already have a feather finish floor quote from OzGrind?

If your quote or proposal refers to a feather finish, a feather finish concrete floor or a feathered overlay, it covers the lighter, hand trowelled topping described on this page, with the same colour options and the same preparation process. If you are weighing it up against micro cement, or anything on your quote is unclear, get in touch and we will walk you through the difference.

More about feather finish flooring

Feather finish concrete flooring is fast becoming popular due to the rustic, natural and individual look that is created. Basically, it is a cement based compound that we hand trowel down on the floor to give a unique finish. No two feather finish floors are the same because every tradesman applying the floor has a different way of applying the product, so different looks are created every time. A feather finish is also a popular choice as a plan B when you want polished concrete flooring and it turns out to not be possible due to your slab being damaged, uneven, stained, or just not the colour you want. The best part about this micro topping is that it is only 2 to 5mm thick, so height changes are almost non-existent.

Originally this finish was only available in a brownish colour, however due to popular demand by our customers, OzGrind has managed to work closely with some suppliers to be able to get the raw product in a white base, which means we can then use an oxide to tint it to pretty much any colour the client desires. Mostly we have had requests for white, greys and blacks, but pretty much anything is possible. OzGrind can offer a range of colours along with a design and pattern completely unique to the individual client, so it truly is a finish worth considering.

The feather finish is now being used in many commercial settings like shops, offices, restaurants and cafes, as well as in residential homes. Enquire with our office team for more information, or request a free quote for your project.

Concrete Overlay & Micro Cement FAQs

What is a polished concrete overlay?

A polished concrete overlay is a thin cement based layer that we hand trowel over your existing slab to create a smooth, seamless concrete floor. It is also called a micro cement floor or micro topping, and it is used when the original slab cannot be polished.

Is a concrete overlay the same as a micro cement floor?

Not quite. Concrete overlay is the umbrella term for the whole family of thin, hand trowelled toppings, and a micro cement floor is one type within it, the premium, more refined and harder wearing finish, while a feather finish is the lighter, more rustic and more economical type. They are closely related and all go over your existing slab, but they are different finishes at different price points.

How thick is a concrete overlay?

Most overlays are only a few millimetres thick, typically around 2 to 5mm depending on the system and how the floor will be used. Because they are so thin, height changes at doorways and transitions are almost non existent, which is one of the reasons an overlay works so well over an existing floor.

Can a concrete overlay go over an existing or damaged slab?

Yes. An overlay is designed to go over your existing concrete slab once the surface is prepared and profiled. It is a great way to cover stains, patches and imperfections without removing the floor underneath.

Can a concrete overlay be used outdoors?

Yes. As well as indoor floors, there are overlay and micro cement systems made for outdoor use, sealed and UV stable for patios, alfresco areas, pool surrounds and entries. We match the system and sealer to where the floor is going.

Can a concrete overlay fix a slab that did not polish up?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons we install an overlay. If a slab is too damaged, stained or uneven to polish, or a tile ghosting sample comes back positive, we trowel an overlay over the top to give you the seamless concrete look you wanted without replacing the floor.

What colours do concrete overlays come in?

Overlays are built on a white base and tinted with oxides, so we can match most tones, from white and soft natural greys through to deep charcoal. Because it is hand trowelled, the finish has a subtle, cloudy movement rather than a flat, uniform colour.

How much does a polished concrete overlay or micro cement floor cost?

Overlay prices are quoted per square metre and depend on the area, the condition of your slab and the finish you choose. As a guide, a feather finish starts from around $190 per square metre and a micro cement floor costs from around $290 per square metre, sitting above polished concrete because every coat is hand trowelled. We give you a firm, no obligation quote once we have seen the floor.

Micro cement floor vs polished concrete, which is better?

Micro cement floor vs polished concrete comes down to your slab. If it is sound, polished concrete is usually the more cost effective option because we polish the slab you already have. An overlay or micro cement floor is the better choice when the slab is too damaged, patched or uneven to polish but you still want the concrete look.

How do I look after a concrete overlay or micro cement floor?

Once cured, the overlay is sealed, and day to day care is simple regular sweeping and a damp mop. We provide floor care instructions so you can keep your overlay or micro cement floor looking its best for years.
