A quick note on naming: "honed concrete" is really the term for polished concrete used outdoors. If you're after a polished floor inside, a home, shop, café or office, that's indoor polished concrete. A lot of people call it all "honed", so if that's what you had in mind, no problem, we do that too, with both mechanically polished concrete (MPC) and grind & seal finishes.

Honed concrete is highly customisable. All honed finishes are matte, however, through different levels of concrete honing and sealer choices you can create a finish ranging from subtle nil-exposure architectural concrete through to a decorative full stone exposure, then choose your sealer look and cement and aggregate colour to suit. We'll help you choose the right combination at quote stage.
Control how much aggregate shows through. Nil exposure stays smooth and architectural; minimal exposure gives a subtle salt-and-pepper look; full exposure reveals the stone for a bold, decorative finish.
Choose the look of the seal. A standard penetrating sealer keeps it natural and low-maintenance; a natural finish softens and lightens; a colour-enhancing wet-look sealer deepens the stone for richer contrast.
It isn't just grey. Add oxides and decorative aggregates to match your home and landscaping, warm and neutral, crisp and light, or dark and dramatic.

Concrete honing is a mechanical grinding process that turns a plain slab into a smooth, matte honed concrete floor. It is outdoor polished concrete, ground back and sealed for a hardwearing, slip-considered finish that suits Queensland patios, driveways and pool surrounds.
Every honed floor is matte, but how much stone you see is up to you. Your stone exposure, nil, minimal or full, sets how heavy the first grinding cut is: a lighter cut only starts to reveal the aggregate, so high spots show more and low spots may show none, while a fuller exposure takes a heavier cut to bring up the stone. We then hand fill any cracks and holes and finish with a penetrating sealer worked in with a non-slip grit. Colour-enhanced is the standard, but you can ask for a natural or wet-look finish.
We grind the slab to your chosen stone exposure, nil, minimal or full, using a finer or heavier diamond cut to match.
Cracks and holes are hand filled with a repair compound (it won't perfectly match the existing concrete), and the surface is grouted where needed.

Honed and polished concrete have been used in premium homes and commercial buildings for generations and remain one of the most sought-after flooring finishes today.
Unlike many coating systems, honed concrete remains breathable, letting moisture vapour pass through the slab naturally rather than becoming trapped beneath the surface. That's a real advantage in Queensland, where pool areas, external slabs, patios, old concrete and retaining-wall backfill areas all commonly experience moisture movement.
If required decades later, honed concrete can typically be re-ground and resealed rather than completely removed and replaced like many alternative flooring systems, a true "once and done" outdoor surface.
The difference is the sealer. Honed concrete uses a penetrating sealer, so there is nothing on the surface to scratch, peel or wear away. Grind and seal (G&S) uses a topical coating, like a clear nail polish, that sits on top of the concrete.
Outdoors that coating is a risk: moisture rising through the slab can get trapped beneath it, causing discolouration, efflorescence and, at worst, delamination, especially where the slab meets lawns or gardens. A honed finish lets the slab breathe, is easy to patch repair and just needs periodic resealing. Want the glossier grind and seal look outside? Talk to us first; we assess the slab and always add a non-slip grit for grip when wet.
