OzGrind has worked closely with award winning builders Thallon Mole Group on a number of projects now, but this project, with it’s unbelievable design by Base Architecture, definitely takes the cake. The design was incredibly detailed, with soft furnishings and finishes used to address the acoustics of the harder surfaces, including the polished concrete flooring completed by yours truly!
This Graceville house, dubbed the ‘House of Darkness’, is unassuming in its street presence, with dark timber and metal cladding a backdrop to the strikingly beautiful tree in front. Designed for entertaining and family, raw concrete platforms define each of the levels, creating an industrial feel throughout.
When we were asked to ensure there was as minimal aggregate exposure as possible, we knew it would be difficult because as any concrete polisher knows, a nil stone exposure finish is the most difficult to achieve. It all comes down to the placement of the concrete slab itself.
Thankfully, the concrete was poured so well that the builders, architects and home-owners got exactly what they wanted. The nil-minimal exposure, matte finish polished concrete floor really ties in all the other qualities of the home, with custom cabinetry and metal detailing in the form of lights, screens, and tiles.

This project included 160m2 of mechanically polished concrete internally and 100m2 of honed concrete externally, putting it in the $15,000-$20,000 price bracket.
